Lyrics
Description
We also came...
Little feet, barefoot and blistered,
We ran through the dusty paths of Bokkos,
Laughed under mango trees in Bassa,
Chased butterflies in the morning mist of Riyom—
We were here.
We also came.
We dreamt.
Yes, we dreamt.
Of chalk-stained fingers in schoolrooms,
Of uniforms two sizes too big, but hearts two times too bold.
We wanted to be doctors, farmers, singers,
Mothers... fathers...
Leaders.
We dreamt—
And oh, how we believed.
But they came too…
Not with books, but bullets.
Not with songs, but sorrow.
They came with fire and fury,
While the ones we were told would protect us—
Stayed silent.
Stayed still.
Stayed safe.
We also came
With names whispered in lullabies,
Now carved in the silence of mass graves.
We also came
With hopes cradled in the arms of mothers
Now empty and trembling,
Searching for sons who won’t come home,
For daughters whose laughter now echoes only in memories.
Oh, how they failed us—
The fathers who now wail beneath the moon,
The mothers with eyes that no longer cry,
Only stare…
The government,
That shook our hands but never held our hearts.
The soldiers,
Who came too late, or never at all.
And the world…
That moved on like we were never here.
But we were.
We were.
We are.
We also came.
Carried by the same breath that birthed your sons and daughters.
Born under the same sun.
And now,
Gone too soon beneath the same sky.
But do not weep forever—
For now, we rest.
Where machetes cannot reach,
Where guns do not thunder,
Where the grass grows untouched,
And the wind speaks gently.
We are the stars now.
We are the echoes in the mountains of Plateau.
The voice in your heartbeat when you remember—
That we also came.
Do not forget us.
Do not silence our story.
Let our blood water justice.
Let our names rise like smoke from the ashes—
because we mattered.
because we were here.because we—
also came.
