Instrumental Arrangement & Performance Outline (2:20–2:40 total)
Goal: An energetic Tamil film–folk–pop hybrid inspired by Ethir Neechal — vibrant, emotional, and instantly memorable. Target length: ~150–160 seconds (2:30–2:40). Tempo: 120 BPM (suggested range 110–130 BPM).
Key & Harmony
- Key: E minor (works well for bright folk ornaments; can shift to G major relative sections for lift).
- Core chord progression (main): Em – C – G – D (use variations and modal inflections: add suspended voicings, add9 on C/G).
- Use occasional modal ornaments (natural minor + occasional raised 7th or Lydian-ish #4) to evoke Tamil folk color.
Instrumentation (primary)
- Lead: Violin or Bansuri/flute-style synth (primary melodic voice). Option swap: acoustic violin or a bright regional flute tone.
- Secondary lead / call-response: Mandolin/clean electric guitar with light chorus or nadaswaram samples for occasional accent hits.
- Rhythm percussion: Layered hand percussion (dholak/thavil samples) + modern drum kit (kick/snare/hi-hat) for pop drive.
- Low end: Punchy electric bass (fingered, with rhythmic slides and octave jumps).
- Harmony / pads: Warm string pads (sustained) and bright nylon guitar strums or rhythm guitar.
- Textural accents: Veena or subtle nadaswaram stabs, small brass hits, temple bell or small metallic percussion for sparkle.
Structure & Timings (~155s total)
- Intro (0:00–0:10, 10s): Motif tag — single-voice statement on lead (two-bar motif) with a spare rhythmic pulse and fingerclick/snare ghost. Establish tempo and hook immediately.
- Theme A (0:10–0:50, 40s): Full hook introduced by lead (violin/flute) over rhythm guitar, bass, and light percussion. Repeat motif twice with small variations and backing harmony.
- Bridge / Interlude (0:50–1:10, 20s): Percussion-forward break — dholak/thavil groove with snare accents. Short instrumental call-and-response between lead and mandolin; use a short harmonic minor flourish to add tension.
- Theme B / Variation (1:10–1:50, 40s): Hook returns with fuller arrangement — strings, wider stereo leads, counter-melody in mandolin/electric guitar. Increase dynamic by doubling melody an octave or adding harmony thirds/fifths.
- Climax (1:50–2:15, 25s): Full-band peak: energetic percussion, sustained high-register violin/flute lead with big string pads and brass stabs. Drop in a short, memorable 8-bar coda phrase to maximize emotional payoff.
- Outro / Tag (2:15–2:30, 15s): Return to motif tag, gradually strip elements leaving a single lead and sparse percussive echo; final tasteful tremolo on violin or final flute meend (glissando) to fade out.
Melodic Hook (two-bar motif — main hook)
- Notation (approximate, in E natural minor). Rhythm (at 120 BPM): two bars = 4/4 each.
- Bar 1: E5 (quarter) — G5 (eighth) — B5 (eighth) — A5 (quarter) — G5 (quarter)
- Bar 2: B5 (dotted quarter) — A5 (eighth) — G5 (quarter) — (grace slide) E5 (quarter)
- Ornamentation: add small slides (meend) into G and B; occasional gam
