Final Chorus
Theresa woke up with a fire in her sight Bent over the counter trying hard not to cry
Said something ain’t right in a scared little tone Doctor shook his head, it’s a hard little stone
Flashing red lights on that lady night ride I held her hand all the way praying inside
Paper wristband and a cold thin gown But my girl’s got grit, she don’t back down
She whispered, baby, I’m scared to death So I kissed her forehead, felt her breath
Theresa’s tougher than a gravel road Fighting like a cowboy in a barroom brawl with that stone
Through the IV drips and the beeping machines She’s still my country angel, my little homecoming queen
Yeah, pain tried to break her down to the bone But she can’t outstub her now, woman, I’ve known
From the worst of the hurt to the ride back home Theresa won the fight with that little stone
Surgeon walked in with a calm, steady draw Said, we’ll get it out, we’ve seen worse than this, y'all
She gave a nervous laugh, tried to play it cool Even on a gurney, she’s the strongest girl in the room
Lights overhead fading into white I said, I’ll be right here when you wake up, alright
She squeezed my fingers with all she had left And let go slow, took a brave deep breath
And somewhere between the fear and the prayers I knew God and the doctors had her in their care
Now she jokes, guess I passed that test Leaning on my shoulder, getting some rest
Says, next time life throws a rock my way We’ll just turn it into a story someday
To anyone hurting in a hard plastic chair She’d say, hold on, honey, you’re stronger than you’re scared
Storms blow through, but they don’t last long One day you’ll laugh and make it into a song
Cause Theresa’s tougher than a gravel road Fighting like a cowboy in a barroom brawl with that stone
Through the IV drips and the beeping machines She’s still my country angel, my little homecoming queen
Now she’s smiling in the truck on the drive back home Windows down, free at last from that stone
From the darkest night to the bright front porch light Theresa and that little stone lost the fight
