Description
[Intro]
[Lute flourish — three bright arpeggios]
(Bard, low) Hearken! — a tale for wandering feet and kindred hearts.
[Stomp-stamp rhythm begins]
[Verse 1]
In Rowan's Rest where embers glow,
The ale doth steam, the embers low,
An innkeeper grins, his coins alight,
Jesters spin tales by torchlit night.
A traveler with dust on knee,
A knight with scar and memory,
They gather close by hearth and lance —
I sing to thee, make merry, dance.
[Pre-Chorus]
[Lute pluck — steady]
Bard: The pipe doth call, the drum doth chance,
All: (soft) Come near, come near, and hear the dance.
Bard: Thy breaths shall match the tavern's beat,
All: (rising) Take hand, take heart, and lift thy feet.
[Chorus]
Stay — stay, if thou wouldst dance tonight,
Under tavern's torchlit, warming light;
Let heel and hand and heart entwine,
Stay — stay, and lend thy fate to mine.
[Verse 2]
The rafters ring with laughter loud,
A coin is tossed — a boon avowed,
Songs of sea and distant keep,
Of love that wakes from winter's sleep.
The minstrel hums a sweeter tune,
A mug is shared beneath the moon,
Old oaths are whispered, old wounds glance —
Hold fast thy seat, and stay the dance.
[Pre-Chorus]
[Lute and pipe — steady climb]
Bard: The strings do beg, the bells advance,
All: (echo) Come near, come near, and feel the dance.
Bard: Let sorrow fall like withered lance,
All: (chant) Tonight we live — tonight we dance.
[Chorus]
Stay — stay, if thou wouldst dance tonight,
Under tavern's torchlit, warming light;
Let heel and hand and heart entwine,
Stay — stay, and lend thy fate to mine.
[Bridge — Narrative Twist]
[Soft harp under — storyteller voice]
There came a wager, low and grave,
A pennied promise, and a knave,
He swore he'd ride ‘til dawn’s first chance
To win a crown, or lose the lance.
Bard: (call)
If he return with sword unbroke,
The fair maid's vow shall be his yoke.
If he fall cold beyond the fray,
We bind his name in songs that stay.
[Bridge — Stakes Raised, rhythmic]
All: (call-and-response)
When coin is cast — who holds the hand?
(Tavern) — The loser stands — the loser stands!
When banners fall — who keeps the flame?
(Tavern) — The brave keep name — the brave keep name!
[Chorus — Climactic]
Stay — stay, if thou wouldst dance tonight,
Under tavern's torchlit, warming light;
Let heel and hand and heart entwine,
Stay — stay, and lend thy fate to mine.
[Performance Cue — Interactive]
[Bard:] I sing a line — ye answer two:
Bard: "Will ye stay?" Tavern: "We will stay!"
Bard: "Will ye dance?" Tavern: "We will dance!"
(Repeat twice; stomps & claps on answer)
[Outro]
[Quiet lute, single torch flicker]
So take my hand and hold it fast,
‘Til dawn hath broke, ‘til shadows pass,
This song shall bind what chance hath planned —
Stay, fair friend, within this band.
[Final Lute flourish — long, lingering]
(Soft echo) Stay — stay — stay.
