Description
Movement I — Introitus (Slow, Solemn — Instrumental)
Tempo: ♪ = 48–52. Measured rubato in opening 12–24 bars. Cathedral reverb: long tail, pre-delay 120–160 ms.
Orchestration & voicing: Cellos (div. 1) sustain low D pedal (open D), sul tasto, pp–p — long arco, using slow hairpin swell. Double basses (sul tasto, arco) double an octave below, arco sul ponticello only at end of phrase. Harpsichord/continuo omitted; organ is a distant drone. Organ pedal: sustained D–A open fifth drone, 16' + 32' stops, very soft (pp) until m.24.
Harmony & texture: modality based in D Phrygian (D–E♭–F–G–A–B♭–C–D) with planed diminished clusters at phrase ends. Avoid cadential resolution — no authentic cadence. Use suspended seconds and planing fourths for archaic color.
Dynamics: pp -> mp across intro. Use long crescendo only at measure 20.
Articulation: long bow strokes, sul tasto for warmth, occasional harmonics in cellos to create spectral overtones.
Movement II — Development (Organ & Low Brass Enter; Modal Expansion)
bar 24: Pipe organ enters (mf -> f) with cluster sonorities: cluster fourths/augmented fourths and diminished sevenths in pedals and lower manuals; use 8' + 16' flue for color. Organ registration: Swell to reed (tromba) at m.40.
Low brass: 2 bass trombones and tuba enter quietly on sustained open fifths beneath organ clusters. Bassoons (low register) add woody color. Horns muted, supporting modal pedal.
Strings: Cellos switch to arco ponticello in higher register for an edgy shimmer; violas play repeated modal ostinato in Dorian modal shape (Dorian on D). Violins remain tacet for much of this section — they will return in Crescendo.
Harmonic language: slow planing of diminished chords, introduced Neapolitan sonority (E♭ major over D bass) to deepen darkness. Use Phrygian half-steps as expressive dissonances.
Form & pacing: Gradual layering: organ drone -> low brass -> woodwinds -> inner strings. No full cadence; sustained ambiguity.
Movement III — Crescendo (Full Orchestra; Dramatic Orchestral Surge)
Tempo: accelerando to ♪ = 56 across the first half of the movement, then return to 52 for the entry of choir.
Orchestration detail: Full strings enter in m.72. Violins divisi (I & II), high violins play sul ponticello with tremolo and harmonic glissandi. Use divisi up to 4 parts for thick upper textures. Violas in mid register with heavy mutes then gradually remove mutes for blossom.
Percussion: Three timpani tuned to tonic D, subtonic (C) and fifth (A). Add tam-tam roll and concert bass drum for subsonic rumble on large accents. Timpani rolls crescendo from pp to fff, tuned glissando on timpani where appropriate for eerie pitch movement.
Low winds & brass: Bass trombones and contrabassoon add subharmonic rumble. Tenor trombones support harmonic weight. Use trombones to anchor the Neapolitan color and to fill the low middle frequency.
Dynamics & articulations: Build from mp -> fff across 24 bars. Violins use sul ponticello and aggressive col legno battuto for percussive shim
