Lyrics
Description
[Verse 1]
Ashley's got his letters in a shoebox by her bed
Reads 'em every night before she lays down her head
Dusty's countin' days on a concrete wall
Three years down, two more till he walks that hall
They met at seventeen, swore they'd never part
But life threw chains around his wrists and cracks across her heart
She's a Libra, weighs the world, tries to keep it fair
He's an Aquarius dreamin' through the prison air
[Chorus]
Love behind the walls, love that won't let go
Through the barbed wire and the collect calls on the phone
Lost a brother way too young, thirty-two and gone
Her daddy's boy, his mama's son, now they're holdin' on
When the world says give it up, they keep standin' tall
That's the kind of love you find behind the walls
[Verse 2]
She wears his ring on a chain, tucks it underneath her shirt
Shows up every Saturday, no matter how it hurts
They talk about the funeral through bulletproof glass
How they held each other up while they lowered him to grass
Same blood ran through that boy from both their family trees
Made them more than lovers, made them bound by grief
She says, "Baby, we'll get through this, I ain't goin' nowhere"
He says, "Girl, you're the only reason I still breathe this air"
[Bridge]
Some folks say she's crazy for waitin' on a man
But they don't know the promise in the touch of his hand
They don't know the way he held her when her brother died
Or how he's payin' for his past while she's right by his side
Stars and scales, water and air
Two different signs, one single prayer
[Outro]
Yeah, Ashley and her Dusty, they're gonna make it through
'Cause the strongest kind of love is the kind that's tested true
Behind the walls
Love behind the walls
